Title: New Property Trail Work
Post by: Lynn on January 25, 2010, 04:14:10 PM
The new property is being called the "Northeast" section.  We will have trail work days on Saturday, Feb 13, and Saturday, March 6 for those who want to come help.   You will be asked to work half the day, and then you can wheel the other half of the day.  No fees are involved unless your membership is expired in which case you need to renew it.

You don't need a modified rig to get around, stock vehicles are fine.  The trail work for now involves widening the existing network of green trails.  Tools needed are chainsaws, loppers and brush cutters (with metal blades, not string).  Or a strong back to toss the debris off the trail.   After the work part of the day is done, those volunteers can take a ride around the Northeast property or go wheel the East,West, or South.   By Feb 13th, we should have the boundaries marked out so you can go exploring as long as you stay in groups of two.

Post up here if you can help and which date you want to help.  We'll try and get started at 9 a.m.    If these dates don't suit and enough people want to come help on another date, we can do that too.  There's plenty of work to be done over several days.

BigZj, if you have heavy equipment to help, send a PM to Bruce, that's his department.

Once we get the main paths opened up for travel, then we can stand back and peak through the trees and brush and get all giddy with excitement over the harder terrain we see, then we start making new trails of the blue-black-red variety.    If we get enough help, and the weather cooperates, I hope by March we are working on harder trails.

EDIT:  You don't need super duty chainsaws like they use on Ax Men.  Smaller saws, 12-14 inch variety, will be fine.

Lynn,
I will be wheeling with a group on the 6th and have plans the "morning" of the 13th.  If I find a trail cutting buddy, do you mind if we show up at lunch and cut in the afternoon?  You will just have to show us some direction.

I know its still early. But will this trail cutting still happen with all the snow we have? Im in Baltimore and we have more than 2 feet. Just seeing how RC is holding up.
Title: Re: New Property Trail Work

It's still on.  We got about a foot of snow.   Tommy was driving around the new property today, he said work can still get done despite the snow.  Folks who wheeled today were able to get in and out of the West property.

That makes alot of sense. It is hard to build a trail when you can not see the ground and what is on it..

I think I can get a few or more willing slaves helpers for the March 6 trail work from Gotham City Land Cruisers and FJ Northeasters. Are you putting a limit on how many people you want, or will you take all you can get? How soon do you have to know about how many will show up from our groups?

We're going to try and have work parties throughout March, assuming we don't get any more measurable snow.  We have quite a few people coming March 6th already, if your clubs want to schedule something later in March, that might work out better.

The March 6th trail cutting is being rescheduled to Saturday March 27th.  Hopefully that date works for everyone who was going to help out on the 6th.   It's just not going to be a productive use of time and energy dealing with the deep snow.

We are still trying to hit the end of March or 1st weekend in April time frame. The next week or so should show how things will play out with the snow melt.  We can open the area up as it is but we still need to get some work done with signs and what not.

Hopefully this rain over the weekends kills enough snow to gets things moving in the right direction.

Yes, it is still on for March 27th.   Tommy, Dennis and I spent a good bit of the weekend putting up signs so everything's ready for Saturday.   Most of the trailwork involves trimming back overgrown trails.  The stuff that needs cut is small, an inch, sometimes two inches, in diamater.  Small chainsaws (12-14") will make quick work of it.   Brushcutters with steel blades will work too on the smaller stuff.

There's also some random trash in a few areas, so we'll have trash bags to hand out as well.

Thanks to everyone who came out this weekend to help open up the NE property.

Got a few pics.

Overlooking the southernmost ridge, home to a really cool green trail called "R", it has just about everything on that trail (mud, ruts, climbs, scenic, wide-open area, forested area).   Of all the trails already on the property this one is my favorite so far.

The top of this ridge is all rock, kinda like Crawler Ridge, Tombstone, etc., except way bigger in scope.   So big that if you are at the bottom, you can't talk to the people at the top like you can at the other obstacles.    Here's Ted working hard clearing access into the rocks

Couple of the guys from NAXJA checked out the mudhole in the PIT.   The Pit  is kinda like Lake Christy, but the hole is not as deep, but awful squishy.  It will only get deeper and goopier as time goes on.  Surrounding the pit is a whole area to climb out of.   Not crazy rocky like Lake Christy, though, should  be doable by lesser equipped rigs.

Lynn while our group of xterras was down playing in the mud in the pit I walked up the hill at the end. ON the right of the XJ in the first picture. That hill climb is really sick and there's a trail at the top that is between the bottom of the pit and trail P which looks like it kind of loops around the top of the pit from trail P to  Pit Jr. It definitely looks like it would be cool to open the trail and make the transition from the trail to the hill climb a little less harsh to avoid high centering. It would open another trail over there and make a really great hill climb. I'd be willing to cut it open with some friends if you guys @ the park are ok with it next time we're down there and if its not already done.

Yes, this side of the park is going to shape up nicely.  I definitely had my "Rock-Radar" on as we drove around the green trails on Sunday.  I saw quite a few little outcroppings of rocks that would be fun obstacles alongside the green trails.

We went and checked out the new red section (Defintiely the "Outer Limits" of that property :338:)  as well.  That ridge looks like lots of fun.  We walked through where the orange tape is run, and I can't wait to try it!!!

Andy, I'm the one who picked that line out.   :338:  I'm hoping that trail will keep the rock stackers at bay.  Just looking up from the bottom should be enough to scare most if not all of them away.  It's not so bad at the bottom but ramps up in difficultly the closer you get to the top.  The rocks get bigger, the hill gets steeper, and the holes between the rocks get bigger.

Here's a teaser for those who haven't seen it yet.

(http://inlinethumb05.webshots.com/45892/2408309270103121848S600x600Q85.jpg) (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2408309270103121848dWhKhX)

That was PRIOR to the tree removal.  The intended line is to basically go straight up between the trees as seen in the above picture.  The markers are on the passenger side going up, then they switch to the driver's side at the top (no trees to mark on the passenger side) then as you go back down the hill they're back on the passenger side.

Oh yeah, and it was nice to finally meet you.  It's always nice to put a name with a face.

I heard you guys had marked that trail, nice work!!I  I am definitely digging it!!  The rocks do get bigger and bigger the further you go up.

It was good meeting you too, we'll catch up one of these days and run some trails when I get my XJ up there.

No John, I cannot take credit for that name, just repeating something I heard...  It is at just about the farthest point from the entrance gate that it could be... there will be some broken rigs making that long limp back to the trailer from the Outer Limits...

So I am pretty sure "Outer Limits" should be run for RCQ.  Just an idea.

It would be bad a$$.

HECK NO!!!!

The trail will be destroyed and made stupid easy just like Jotter's since RCQ last year.  I want to be able to run this trail one time before the rock stackers have at it, or get's destroyed by 17 buggies trying to go up it at once like Jotter's last year.  :hilarious:

looks like that trail will have lots of carnage question is who's gunna run the virgin trail first. hey red any idea on the name of it ?

When I look at that pic, "Satans staircase" comes to mind. If the trail has no name, that is what I suggest.

I forgot to mention that I don't want to have to walk that far to spectate the mayhem. Walking to Rock Creek last year brought the suck bad enough.  :hilarious:

I would have at least attempted it but I didn't for the following reasons.

- I wanted a spotter I could trust (No offense what so ever to the group I was with, I hope you can understand where I'm coming from with this statement)
- Not a single vehicle in the group was capable enough to get me out in the event I broke/got stuck (Heck my truck isn't even capable enough, still open in the front, but I would have given that trail hell!)
- trying to keep my rig in one piece for a big trip to Connecticut at the end of May

I hope I'm there when it's run.  I really want to see this trail run, the way I intended it to be run...no go arounds used, and the hardest lines picked.  This is a RED trail...it was meant to be hard.

I helped along the high speed section last year and I got to drive out there.  This year I will be on a team so I will be doing a bit of jogging to different sections to check out how our team is doing.  I think I might get a $50 mtn bike from walmart or something.

When someone sugested you "give it a try" you and I looked at each other and knew no one could help you if you needed it. I respect your will power, you were chomping at the bit. I hope you get first crack at it.

Ted, forgot to say this in person, but "You sir are the man for bringing that chainsaw and cutting all those trees down!"  I applaud you!

And yes I wanted to run it in the worst way.  I don't mind if I get first crack at it or not, but want to give it a try before it gets changed too much from wear and weather.

Thanks, I do like trail cutting. From stock trails to black/red lines I fell a lot of trees. I think this trail will change a lot after the first couple dozen rigs and a line is found. The smaller rocks just won't hold but thoes big ones will.

If you think Jotter's is easy, I have some land in Florida I want to sell you.  I'm not talking about the right side either.

I had an idea for the new trail name come to me out of nowhere just minutes ago.

Event Horizon

It kind of fits too.  The top of the hill would be the horizon, and for those who saw the movie, you know all hell breaks loose on that ship.

The name will be Outer Limits.

Red, I'm surprised you didn't come up with another movie name for it.    Something to do with Mars?

Make sure you and your group gets many pictures/videos of such things (success or failure, I don't care) and report back to us on what you thought about the new trail.

ended up bailing to help Oz get back to the parking lot and Tim's rig was having some steering issues, so it was a good time to duck out.
